What we believe matters.

As individuals, what we believe is vitally important to who we are. What we believe impacts how we live our lives and where we find our purpose. At Greater Vancouver Baptist Church, our beliefs are based on one core truth: that the Bible is God’s Word and that it is the source of truth and all that we believe.

Our belief in the Bible as God's Word shapes our values, teachings, and practices. It serves as our guide in making decisions and provides a solid foundation for our faith. At Greater Vancouver Baptist Church, we strive to align our actions and teachings with the principles found in the Bible, seeking to live out our beliefs authentically.

God has created us, loves us, and has taken an interest in us as His creation. He has chosen to communicate with us through His Word, the Bible. The Bible is where we find comfort, guidance, wisdom, and hope for our lives. By placing our trust in the Bible as the ultimate authority, we are able to build a strong foundation for our faith and find purpose in living according to God's will. At Greater Vancouver Baptist Church, we strive to faithfully follow and apply the truths found in the Bible, allowing it to shape every aspect of our lives and ministry and bring us closer to God.

  • We believe that the Bible is the Word of God. It has been given to us by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: Because the Scriptures are God-breathed, divine inspiration extends equally and fully to all parts of Scripture in the original manuscripts. Every word has been given and superintended by God Himself and they are without error in every detail. We believe the Bible is the final revelation of the will of God to man and is the only perfect standard by which all human behaviour, doctrine, faith, practice, and fellowship should be tried.

Furthermore, God has promised to preserve His Word perfectly free from loss or corruption throughout all generations. We believe specifically that the Authorized Version (King James Bible) is a correct English translation of the preserved original texts known as the Masoretic and Received Texts. We are committed to use only the King James Version for all church ministries including preaching and teaching at any and all levels of instruction. We support the direct translation of other language versions based upon those same preserved texts.

    Why We Believe It: 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Matthew 5:18; 24:35; Proverbs 30:5-6; Psalm 119:89, 160; Revelation 22:18-19; Isaiah 40:8; Psalm 12:6-7; 1 Peter 1:23-25

  • We believe that there is One, and only One, living and true God Who is an infinite, intelligent, perfect Spirit, and personal Being. This true God of the Bible is the Creator, Preserver, and Supreme Ruler of the universe and is inexpressibly glorious in His holiness and all other perfections.

Jehovah God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and everywhere present; He is without beginning or end. He is absolute in His holiness and the righteous Judge of all things. He is a God of great love and compassion, full of mercy and longsuffering. He is worthy of all possible honour, confidence, and love. In the unity of the Godhead there are three (3) divine Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. They are equal in every divine perfection and are united in carrying out distinct, but complementary roles in the great work of redemption.

    Why We Believe It: John 4:24; Genesis 1:1; Jeremiah 10:10; Matthew 28:19; John 10:30; Exodus 15:11; Philippians 2:6; 1 John 5:7

  • We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is eternal and that He has always been and always will be God the Son. He fully possesses every attribute and character of God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. In the Sovereign plan of the Triune Godhead, Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of Mary, a virgin. Christ became fully man without, in any way, ceasing to be fully God.

He was indeed, God manifest in the flesh and in Him dwelt all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. He lived a life wholly apart from sin, being perfect in all His ways and sinless. The Lord Jesus, through His voluntary death on the cross as our Substitute, made full and complete payment for the sin of the human race and satisfied the debt we owe to God for our sin. We believe that Jesus rose bodily from the dead on the third day, confirming God the Father’s satisfaction with Christ’s payment for sin and that He ascended bodily back to Heaven. We believe that the imminent return of Christ to catch away (rapture) His saints is personal, pre-tribulational, and pre-millennial. The Lord Jesus Christ is now preparing a place for believers in Heaven and He will come a second time to establish His kingdom.

    Why We Believe It: Matthew 1:20-23; 25:31; Luke 1:35: John 1:1, 14; 16:7-11; Acts 1:9-11; 7:55-56; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 2:5-11; Colossians 2:9; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 1:1-12; 10:1-10, 12

  • We believe that the human race was created in innocence by God and enjoyed direct fellowship with their Creator. However, by their deliberate disobedience they fell from their sinless and happy state and were plunged into sin and death. The ongoing consequence of their sin is that all people are now sinners not by constraint, but by birth and then, by choice. The human race, in their natural state are without holiness and fall short of the righteous standard set by their Creator. Truly, there is none righteous, no not one and therefore we fall under the just condemnation of God without defence or excuse.

    Why We Believe It: Genesis 1:27-31; Genesis 3:6-24; Isaiah 53:6; Ezekiel 18:19-20; Jeremiah 17:9; Isaiah 64:6; Romans 1:20; 3:10-12, 23; 5:12, 19-20

  • We believe that God in His love and mercy has provided eternal salvation for the entire sinning human race through the perfect redemptive and substitutionary sacrifice of our Lord Jesus who bore all the sins of the world in His own body. The conditions of salvation are repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation is totally of grace through faith without any works of righteousness or efforts on the part of any individual and is freely given to all who will receive it.

We believe that any individual who repents and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ is saved instantaneously and is made a new creature in Christ. They are, from that moment, forever in Christ and are justified, forgiven, imputed with Christ’s righteousness, regenerated, given eternal life, adopted into the family of God, redeemed, given spiritual gift(s), sealed by the Holy Spirit, and eternally secure in their salvation in Jesus Christ.

We believe that once a person is born again by the Spirit of God, they are also sanctified (set apart) by Him. This sanctification, we believe, is first, positional in that the believer is immediately separated unto God through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Second, sanctification is progressive in that it is a work of God the Holy Spirit in the life of the individual believers to transform them to become more like Christ as they grow in grace and in the knowledge of their Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Finally, the child of God will one day be sanctified permanently into the presence of their Saviour and Lord with the rapture or resurrection of their body at His coming.

It should be noted that we do not endorse the theological position known as Calvinism nor do we hold to any of John Calvin’s five points as defined and taught by him. This would also include what is known as reformed theology and its many variations. Our position on Biblical salvation is clearly outlined above.

    Why We Believe It: Romans 5:8; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 2:2; Acts 20:21; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 6:37,44; John 3:5; Romans 10:17; Romans 5:1-9; Hebrews 10:17; 1 John 1:9; Romans 4:5-8; Titus 3:5; John 3:3-5; John 10:28; Ephesians 1:5,13; Colossians 1:14; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; Hebrews 10:10; John 5:24; 1 John 5:4; Colossians 3:8-12; Romans 6:13; 8:13; 1 Peter 1:23; 1 John 3:2; 1 Thessalonians 3:13; Philippians 3:20-21

  • We believe that the New Testament church is a visible assembly of baptized believers, associated by common faith and fellowship in the Gospel. The local church is to be governed by the Word of God, exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by Scripture. The mission and purpose of the church is found in the Great Commission; that each local church has the absolute right of self-government with Christ as the Head, free from the interference of any hierarchy of any individuals, churches, or organizations.

While we uphold the truth that all believers are placed in the family of God, we do not believe that the concept of a universal, invisible church is consistent with Scripture. Local church leadership is defined in Scripture as being limited to a pastor and deacons whose qualifications, responsibilities and duties are outlined in 1 Timothy and Titus. We believe that God views men and women as being completely equal in spirit and importance, but He has defined distinct and unique roles for both. God has clearly stated that the spiritual leadership offices of the local church are limited to qualified men.

We believe that the local assembly of believers is charged with the responsibility and authority to administer and observe the ordinances of baptism by immersion and the Lord’s table. These ordinances convey no saving merit or grace, but are to be observed in obedience to the instruction of Jesus Christ and His Word. We believe that Biblical baptism is the immersion in water of a saved believer in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; that it pictures the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ and also the believer’s death to sin and his resurrection to a new life. The authority to baptize rests in a local church which embraces sound doctrine.

We believe that observing the Lord’s Supper is a privilege and responsibility intended only for those who are baptized believers in Christ and who are members of the local church which is observing the ordinance. The sacred use of the unleavened bread and fruit of the vine are symbolic only, commemorating together the death of Christ. It is to be preceded by solemn self-examination.

We would like to state that we are a Baptist church and are committed to preserving our identity and Baptist distinctiveness. We are Baptists, not by denomination, but by identification with the historic believers who, down through the centuries, have held to clear Bible doctrine and principles and have paid a great price to stand true to the Word of God and the preaching of its truth. We further state that we are not protestants in that Baptist people can be found throughout history that were never part of Rome and thus never needed to “protest.” Baptist history is truly a “trail of blood” and we are honoured and committed to be identified with such faithful people.
